January 2010 - Distemper Outbreak
Houston veterinarians have seen an alarming rise of canine distemper cases in the Houston area. Distemper is almost always fatal. It begins with symptoms resembling a cold with a runny nose, fever, and matted eyes. It then affects the gastrointestinal tract and moves into the central nervous system.
The virus is spread through coughing and contact with body fluids. Puppies are most susceptible. However, dogs that are not currently vaccinated for distemper are also extremely susceptible.
- If your pet displays cold or flu symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
- Keep your dog isolated from other animals and outdoor areas where other animals frequent.
- If you are unsure whether your pet’s vaccinations are current, revaccination will not harm your animal.
